| Among its vast sound archives collection The British Library has a Millennium Memory Bank, consisting of interviews with people from all over the nation at the end of the last century. One interviewee in 1999 was from Walsingham - Rose Howell, born in 1906. On the BL site is a summary transcription of the one-hour interview (which can be heard in full if one visits the Library, booking in advance). Although Rose was not directly connected with the Shrine, its life is frequently mentioned in the interview. Despite her occasional lapses of memory, the whole piece gives a fascinating picture of life in the village during Rose's early years, and then later when she returned to Norfolk in 1949 to look after her aged parents. |
