the seal of the medieval priory
Walsingham Priory deed, 1537, with seal

31 July 1537

Grant of land in reversion from the last Prior of Walsingham, Richard Vowell, to Edward Cockett, knight, of lands and tenements [buildings] in Appleton in the manor of Flitcham, Norfolk, next to property in Hillington which Cockett already owns.

This deed, a gift to the Shrine in 1932, hangs behind two layers of glass in a strong wooden frame in the College Refectory.

Both sides are shown here, with a larger-scale photograph of the front and back of the [repaired] seal.

Its main interest now is in the seal: one side shows what is assumed to be the original 12th century statue of Our Lady of Walsingham, on which the present statue is modelled. The other side shows what may well be the medieval shrine church, destroyed in 1538.

Amateur photography is limited by the glass and frame, and on this occasion by strong sunlight to the right.
