This picture was taken during the building operations in 1931. It shows the Well as it was discovered, after the surrounding soil had been removed and before the coping was restored. The brickwork behind is the foundation of the Holy House, the floor of which is on ground level. The Well walls rest on four irregular strips of wood, which look like boughs of trees. The column in the foreground is the foundation of one of the pillars of the Outer Church, while the second of the two walls at the top is the outer wall of the Sanctuary. |
