Our
Lady of Egmanton |

Our Lady's Mirror Spring Summer 1929 From before the 12th century it was the centre of a special devotion to Our Lady, venerated under the local title of “Our Lady of Egmanton.” The ancient Parish Church – parts of which date back to before 1100 – is dedicated to her under that traditional name, and there until the destruction of 1547 her Shrine was a prominent feature to which many sought from near and far. Typical evidence of the veneration in which the place was held is found, for example, in 1531, in the will of one “Richard Cuxton of Egmanton, gent,” who gives “his soul to God Almighty, St Mary and All Saints, and his body to be buried in the Church of Our Blessed Lady of Egmanton.” The dismantled Shrine was set up once more on the north wall of the sanctuary near the High Altar at the restoration of the Church, and devotion is now again awakening to Our Lady of Egmanton. Much remains
to be done for the worthy adorning of the Shrine and the Parish Priest
will gratefully accept gifts to be devoted to that purpose. An immediate
appeal is made for £50. |
